The University of Rhode Island opened a new laboratory dedicated to studying artificial intelligence at its Kingston Campus on Tuesday.

According to the university, the lab gives students and faculty the opportunity to research things like robotics and wearable technology, as well as the ethical considerations of artificial intelligence.

University Libraries Dean Karim Boughida said the lab will be open to students in all fields of discipline, as well as the general public.

“The equipment is the easy part, but the curriculum is the hard part.  It takes year to prepare it and involve everyone.  But there’s a good vibe and the students are very, very much interested. And we have many people interested from all disciples,” Boughida said.

Funding for the new lab was paid in part by a $140,000 grant from the Champlin Foundation.
