Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza tested positive for COVID-19, his office said Thursday.

After experiencing symptoms, Elorza took an at-home test, which came back positive, according to an email from a spokesperson. Elorza was still awaiting a PCR test meant to confirm the results.

The severity of Elorza’s symptoms are unclear at this point, and the mayor is vaccinated and boosted.

Elorza appeared outdoors at a public event on Wednesday with City Council President Pro Tempore Pedro Espinal and councilors Mary Kay Harris and Carmen Castillo. He also spoke indoors with residents at Parenti Villa, a public housing development for elderly people and people with disabilities, according to a photo posted to Twitter.

The mayor’s office said he had canceled in-person meetings “for the next few days” and plans to work remotely.
