Billy McMillon, who has been the Boston Red Sox minor league outfield and base running coordinator for the past three seasons, has been named manager of the Pawtucket Red Sox for the 2019 season that begins in April.
Before his stint as outfield and base running coordinator, McMillon, 47, served six seasons as a manager with Boston’s minor league clubs in Greenville, Salem and at AA Portland. McMillon replaces Kevin Boles, who had been the PawSox manager from 2014 to 2018 before leaving the organization at the end of last season in September.
McMillon’s 12-year playing career included parts of six seasons in the majors as an outfielder with the Florida Marlins, Philadelphia Phillies, Detroit Tigers and Oakland Athletics. He hit six home runs for OIakland in 2003 and appeared in three games during that seasons’ American League Division Series, which was won by the Red Sox, three games to two.
When he moved to AA Portland in 2014 he was named Eastern League manager of the year. Among the Boston players he managed in the minors were Christian Vasquez, Xander Bogaerts, Jackie Bradley Jr., Travis Shaw, Matt Barnes, Brandan Workman, Mookie Betts, Robby Scott and Blake Swihart.
McMillon becomes the 17th manager in PawSox history. McMillon forged a .524 winning percentage in his previous minor league managing jobs.
