The company proposing to build a power plant in Burrillville is tapping into the city of Woonsocket for water to cool the plant.
In its progress report to the state Energy Facility Siting Board (EFSB), Invenergy described Woonsocket as a good match for the plant’s water needs. The company’s development director said the city has plenty of water to meet the power plant’s needs. He added the city would financially benefit from the sale of water to the plant.
The company and the city are still working out the details of a water plan. But it would involve building a new pumping station and a 14-mile water pipeline from Woonsocket to the power plant. Opponents of the power plant are asking Woonsocket officials to reject Invenergy’s proposal.
Invenergy has until mid-January to update its water use needs on its permit application to the EFSB. The permitting process was suspended in October after the board found portions of the application incomplete.
