Heavy rain is in the forecast for southern New England next week as Hurricane Irma makes it way to the states, according to the National Weather Service

The hurricane is expected to hit South Florida Sunday morning as a category 4 storm with winds more than 100 miles per hour.

Lenore Correia, meteorologist for the National Weather Service, said after Irma reaches Florida, it’s expected to move inland toward South Carolina.

“So by the time (Hurricane Irma) actually comes up here, it’ll just be heavy rain, which will probably be Wednesday and Thursday, but we’re not expecting any hurricane or tropical storm conditions at this time,” Correia said.

Irma hit Puerto Rico last night as a category 5 storm leaving more than 1 million people without power.
