A New England-based environmental advocacy group says the region is making progress improving air quality, but more work needs to done.

The update comes as the Global Climate Action Summit wraps up in San Francisco. Leaders and environmentalists from around the world gathered to recognize environmental achievements. They also discussed challenges meeting carbon emissions reduction targets set in the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement.

Brad Campbell, president of Conservation Law Foundation, attended the event. Campbell said New England is making great progress in green energy.

“We’re seeing a high degree of investment in the technologies that are going to allow us to decarbonize our energy system in a way that’s efficient and that creates jobs and helps grow the economy,” he said.

However, Campbell added New England still needs to find ways to reduce more carbon emissions from the transportation sector.

“For the very first time in this country, greenhouse gas emissions from cars and trucks are exceeding those from the electricity sector,” he said.

Campbell said solutions for transportation need to be made at a regional level since it’s harder to do it on a state-by-state basis.
