One of Rhode Island’s only Spanish-language theater companies is getting its own home. The ECAS Theatre in Providence has been operating for nearly two decades. (ECAS stands for Educational Center for the Arts and Sciences.)
ECAS began in 1997, producing plays in both English and Spanish. Up to now, the group has rented space, but organizers have found a permanent home in Providence’s South Side.
The group mainly stages plays from Hispanic countries. Artistic Director Francis Parra said they provide a glimpse into the national cultures of many Rhode Island residents.
“Which is something that is important for the Latino population, but, as well, is something that is helping other cultures to understand where we are coming from,” said Parra.
Parra described the company as a cultural touchstone for the Ocean State’s many Hispanic residents.
“This is helping them to understand not only their own heritage; they understand how they can fit in this new country,” said Parra.
Parra says with a permanent home, ECAS will expand its programing, producing plays for longer runs, instead of just a few weekends. It was partially funded by the non-profit organization One Neighborhood Builders, which encourages development in low income neighborhoods.
