As of 2004, the Association of American Medical Colleges has used the phrase “underrepresented in medicine” to refer to any racial and ethnic groups that are, well, underrepresented in medical professions based on their relative population in the rest of the country. Medical schools use the term “URM” to talk about diversity in their classes, but that doesn’t tell the whole story.
